Savvy college students soon figure out that there are just certain things never to ask. As a former Assistant Professor at the US Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, CO, I know those little pet peeves that drive professors right up the wall. Unfortunately, professors don't come with an instruction book, so I wrote "College Success Your Way, What Your Professors Won't Tell You and Your Friends Don't Know," so all students can know up front the inside secrets about succeeding in college. Here are three "killer questions" never to ask your professor. Think twice before you ask them. Although your heart is in the right place, your frustrated professor could hear a completely different message. "When is it due?" "Is this testable?" "I was gone last class. Did I miss anything important?" Let's take a closer look at why you'll want to avoid these questions. "When's it due?" You may simply be thinking ahead. But, the professor wonders why you're asking something in your syllabus. Asking your teacher when something is due is like asking where your notebook is. It's your job to know. "Is this testable?" This seems like a smart question, doesn't it? Nope. It drives professors crazy. Why? Here's what the professor hears when you ask that question: "Do I need to listen now, or can I zone out again, since I'm bored beyond belief, and I'm only taking this class because there was no way out of it?" While it may be the case that you are barely able to remain conscious as the professor drones on, remember, diplomacy is key. And, it's your job to figure out what might be tested by paying close enough attention so you can tell when points are being repeated and emphasized. Your professor isn't generally going to be so blunt as to say, "And this is on the test." If she does, consider it a gift. And finally, do not ask, "I was gone last class. Did I miss anything important?" This is actually a common question that, on the surface, seems harmless enough. Aren't you even quite responsible to follow up and ask to make sure you aren't missing out on some crucial point in your education because you didn't attend the last class? Sadly, dear student, in spite of your best intentions about making up for lost time in following up on any goodies missed, here's what the professor hears, "Did you say anything I'll be tested on?" or worse, "You don't usually say anything important, was last Tuesday an exception?" However they will be restored in that a small remnant will accept Christ Jesus as the Messiah after Christ's coming again on the clouds of heaven (see 1 Cor.15.51 ff.; 1 Thes. 4.15 ff. The time of grace in which the bride of the Lamb is formed, the Church [which began at Pentecost] is a historical parenthesis that more or less interrupts God's direct dealings with the Jews and with the nations as they are linked to the fate of Israel [see also Rom. chs. 9-11] The time of grace ends with the rapture of the Church on the clouds of heaven and then the last week of seven years begins [Dan. 9.24-27]. In all probability there will be another historical parenthesis between the rapture and the last week of Daniel. Alone already because of the fact that the beast makes a seven year alliance with Israel. However Daniels last week is also seven years. But the beast and the antichrist cannot act before the Church has been taken up, as the Holy Spirit thwarts them. They must prepare their respective roles before the last week. And who knows what all has to happen yet before they are there? The world will not go down in the Apocalypse for who knows how long! Because before the beast the seventh king has to come yet as well[zee Rev.18.10,11].) The Moslem nations around them thank their existence in the first place to God's dealings with this nation. And oil made it all possible, financially. [In fact from the cradle of history (Gen. 10) the fate of all the nations of the world has been tied up with the history of the Jews! (cf. Gen. 46.27; Deut. 10.22; Deut. 32.8 and Acts 7.14. This is one of the mysteries of God's higher logic and God's higher laws!) One must bear in mind also, however, that the bible speaks of the times of the gentiles that started with the empire of Nebuchadnezzar, when the nation of Isreal lost their position and in principle became 'Lo-Ammi'. (cf. Lu. 21.24; Job 12.23; Dan. ch. 7; etc.] By the way, in Ezek. 38.12 where the KJV has 'the midst of the land' may very well be translated 'the navel of the earth'. Israel is not only at the center of the world geographically, but will be so also spiritually! Before the Shekinah glory (the cloud of God's majesty that descended on Solomon's temple [1 Kings 8.10, 11]) left Jerusalem in the days of the prophet Ezekiel (see Ezek. chs. 1+10) a long history of warnings had preceded. But the Jews killed many of the prophets and God's servants. When Christ came He said to the Pharisees: 'Fill ye up the measure of your fathers(!)' (Mat. 23.32). I hasten to say that christians so-called and unworthy of the Name of names, abused the fact that the Jews slew the Messiah and used it as a pretext for antisemitism to degrade, to rob and to harrass Jewry throughout the centuries. In Revelation 11.8 Jerusalem is called Sodom and Egypt, why then do some naive christians go to the other extreme and try to be friends with Jewry only and pray for the peace of Jerusalem as if the Prince of Peace is already there?. Do not take me wrong, please, I am not at all advocating some religious form of antisemitism. But a serious and orthodox Jew attemps to be dependent in the first place on his JHWH and according to the apostle Paul when he reads the O.T. in the synagogue there is a veil on his heart so he cannot understand. (2 Cor.3.15). Christians should attempt to find the golden mean between antisemitism and a naive and ignorant friendship with Jewry. If a christian does the former than he or she has learned nothing from the holocaust. If the latter than, really, the befriended Jew or Jewess is not helped enough. We are not tourists in this life. We are on our way to our eternal destiny. There will be no lasting peace in the Middle East and indeed in the entire world until the Prince of Peace has returned Himself (Zec. 14.4). In the same book it has been prophesied that Jerusalem will be a cup of bewilderment (sic!) to all the surrounding nations (Zec.12.2, 3). Why is this all so, we should wonder. Why the holocaust, why this powder barrel in the Middle East? Why indeed any suffering at all? It is because the Lord God, the Creator of heaven and earth is so holy that stealing an 'apple' is a mortal sin. Sin in general has the character of Eve's desiring to be like God. And we all try to do the same thing as our first mother. We want to be independent from God, do our own thing; without wanting to be responsible or worry at all about higher responsibilities, let alone higher laws. The spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus (Rev. 19.10). Christ Jesus is the answer to all our suffering. He that allowed us to fall, came to suffer the ultimate. While the husband is advancing himself vocationally, or rising in his company, the wife busies herself getting up church suppers and organizing flower shows which consume her time and energy, but do not show up in either the pay check or her vocational standing. Yet such advantages are not always enough to keep the husband ahead. If the difference in ability is marked, it speedily becomes known. Such a situation may be concealed by a polite little conspiracy to maintain the fiction of male superiority, but everyone knows to whom to go, to get things done. In our day this fiction is becoming more difficult to maintain. More and more wives are going back to work as soon as their children are old enough to be left by themselves, and are getting real money and recognition. In some instances, the wife will outstrip her husband. The problem often becomes a real issue at the time when her income exceeds his. My feeling is that the soundest marriages are those in which husband and wife are on about the same level of intelligence. We may think that the problem will be serious, only if the girl is markedly superior, but this is by no means necessarily true. The girl who marries a man who is intellectually far superior may face problems quite as serious. She will be safer if she chooses a man more nearly on her own level, so that through the years the relationship can most easily be maintained. There is just as much chance that the wife will be superior to the husband, as the other way around. All who marry should face this fact. Actually there is no more justification for a man feeling embarrassed because his wife is superior, than there is for a wife to feel embarrassed because her husband excels her. I came up with Theme Nights, so we could " play" as a family. It's worked great so far. At our house, Monday is Reading Night. We get in our tent, or go outside with flashlights, and, well read. Tuesday we have game night. We get our board games out of the closet and play as many as we can. Wednesday is Movie Night, and Thursday is Kid's Choice. Anything goes, well sort of. Racing Games My little boys love to make everything a competition. We make a start and finish and the kids choose how we race. Running, hopping, crawling is good with my youngest who is 2. My older son, 3, loves for me to draw a maze outside with chalk. We have to jump over water and fire, climb up a mountain,and hop on boulders. Get creative, or let your child's imagination shine through. Fire Ball Toss Kids love to throw things. And most of the time they pick the hardest things to throw at you. I got tired of being pummeled by blocks and books, so I tried crumbling up paper into balls. We threw them at each other. Much better. My son says they are grenades but we've also colored them orange and red to be fire too. By Kenneth C. Hoffman I was nine, by brother eight, when we discovered that our sister, Karen, age two, was terrified of the hassock. One of us had rolled it toward her accidentally and she freaked out. Screaming, she just sat there on the floor, too petrified to move. We boys just stared and thought, "Oh, this is interesting, just rolling the hassock can really get her scared!" What is it in little boys that makes them want to see what happens when you stamp on a spider? What makes them taunt the littlest kid on the block? Maybe they were picked on when they were smaller and they want to get even. Or it might be that they like to exercise the natural mean streak they inherited from the cave men. A few years later we moved to the country. Now my little sister found new terrors to whet her fear appetite. There were black bears in the woods, we told her, one swipe of razor claws could rip out your stomach! Just this much information would send her in the house for the rest of the afternoon. We added to the list wildcats up on the mountain fiercely protecting their wild litter and three-foot-long pike with needle teeth lurking in the shallows of the lake where she played. It was too much of a temptation not to silently creep up to her underwater and brush her legs with a piece of sea weed, erupting in laughter and spray at her panicky exit. Our crowning touch was later after dark when we waited, hearts pounding, outside her talcum-powder-smelling room for her to fall asleep. One of us would watch for curious parents while the other would crawl inch by inch into the room. Slithering under her bed, I would mimic the growl of a lion -- starting low in our throats, turning into a gravelly choking cry. A few bumps on the bottom of the mattress added to the realism as our easy prey woke up screaming. We would scatter to our room, diving for our beds. The air would have hardly settled out of the covers when our all-knowing parents would charge in demanding to know what was going on. Our guilty looks and simultaneous denials did not save us. We were grounded the next day. Of course, if anything or anyone real would threaten our little sister, we would fight them to the death to protect her. Rotten kids. Family always meant a lot to me.
