Fun Family Activities
By Kim Hall I’m a stay at home mom of two toddler boys. I am always trying out ideas to see if they can help with my family. Here are some that have worked well for me. If you have some activities or ideas that can involve kids, email me. We love to experiment. Family Campout Night Do you have trouble getting your kids to bed on time? I sure have before. I was tired and ready to drop but my kids would still be running circles around my couch. So I came up with an idea that sure has helped with my own bed battles. Every Friday and Saturday night at our house is a Campout. We play games, have popcorn, and watch a movie together. My sons even beg me to get the covers out on the floor. It’s something my family has enjoyed. Every night I’m asked is it Friday by my three year old. Now during the week it’s not a struggle when it’s time to go to bed. Rice Fun I have tried dyeing rice. My kids don’t enjoy our sandbox so I thought this would not keep them occupied. Boy was I wrong! They played with the rice for two weeks. To their sadness, I had to get rid of it though. We had kept it outside in a water table. This drew in many flies. If you use rice, keep it inside. Sponge Tag Nothing will excite your child more than a game where they have to get you. Fill a bucket with water and get your sponge ready. Then fire! This has kept my older son occupied for hours. Theme Nights Being home everyday, we three get a little bored of the same ol’ routine. I came up with Theme Nights, so we could ” play” as a family. It’s worked great so far. At our house, Monday is Reading Night. We get in our tent, or go outside with flashlights, and, well read. Tuesday we have game night. We get our board games out of the closet and play as many as we can. Wednesday is Movie Night, and Thursday is Kid’s Choice. Anything goes, well sort of. Racing Games My little boys love to make everything a competition. We make a start and finish and the kids choose how we race. Running, hopping, crawling is good with my youngest who is 2. My older son, 3, loves for me to draw a maze outside with chalk. We have to jump over water and fire, climb up a mountain, and hop on boulders. Get creative, or let your child’s imagination shine through. Fire Ball Toss Kids love to throw things. And most of the time they pick the hardest things to throw at you. I got tired of being pummeled by blocks and books, so I tried crumbling up paper into balls. We threw them at each other. Much better. My son says they are grenades but we’ve also colored them orange and red to be fire too.
