By Terry Blackburn Growing Cucumbers All members of the Cucumber family (Gherkins, Melons, Marrows and Pumpkins) have three major requirements - warmth, moisture and a rich soil containing plenty of organic matter. They are not hardy, though some varieties are suitable for outside growing but it does depend on your area and weather conditions. Soil Preparation for Outdoor Varieties Cucumbers prefer soils containing plenty of organic matter; they do best in positions where there is shelter from cold winds and they must have a sunny site. When preparing the ground, add plenty of manure and compost where the plants are to grow. Begin by digging a trench 9 in. (228mm) deep put in the manure then dig another putting the soil from this into the first trench. This will form a ridge; the cucumbers can be planted into the ridges, 3 ft. (90cm) apart. Sowing Under Cover Sow the seed mid March through to late May putting the seeds into trays or small pots in. (12mm) deep, at a temperature of 70 to 75 deg F. (21 to 24 deg C.) germination takes 3 - 15 days at these temperatures. Later transplant the seedlings singularly into 5 in. pots. Gradually reduce the temperature down to 65 f. (18 C.) If you are growing the outdoor varieties begin to harden them off before putting the young plants into cold frames at the end of May. Plant them out after about two or three weeks along the ridges when the chance of frost has passed. Greenhouse Growing When the seedlings have reached the four-leaf stage re-pot into either large pots or grow-bags. If you are using grow-bags allow three plants per bag. Train the main stem up wires to give the plant support. Stretch training wires from end to end of the greenhouse12 in. 30cm) apart and 12 in. (30cm) from the glass; tie strings every 2 ft. (60cm) at right-angles to the wires, train the leader growths towards the ridge of the house. Tie side shoots to the wires and stop at second leaf; stop sub-laterals at first leaf. Give them shade in sunny weather Planting Outdoors Water the pots well before planting out. Avoid holding the plants by their stems as they are easily bruised causing them irreparable damage. If the weather is cool cover each plant with a cloche for the first week to give them a little warmth and protection. One of the best methods I find is to use a half of a clear plastic 5 litre mineral bottle. Cut in half, the bottle makes two excellent cloches. The top half, whilst giving protection also allows air and moisture through the neck onto the plants. General care Cucumbers require plenty of water so that they are able to grow and fully develop, soak the roots thoroughly and regularly. Greenhouse grown plants should be sprayed during hot weather to maintain a high humidity, and fed weekly with a good liquid fertiliser. Those growing outdoors must be given extra protection against the surface roots drying out; grass clippings can be used as mulch. They are generally trouble free if the summer is a good one, however slugs can sometimes be a problem; to be on the safe side position a few slug traps around the base of the plants. Male and female flowers are produced, but male flowers are picked off as they appear, this is to prevent pollination of the females for pollinated female flowers produce bitter cucumbers with large seeds. Just as soon as the first fruits are about 3 in. (76mm) long, begin to give the plants a weekly feed of liquid fertilizer. Harvesting Cut the fruits as soon as they ready, the size will depend on the variety which you are growing. They can be cut regularly for this will encourage the plant to produce more fruit. The best way to learn about threads is to play with different ones and discover the effects each will have in various situations. One important tip to keep in mind is you should always be able to break the thread by pulling on it between your two hands. If you cannot break it, do not use it for quilting! It is actually too strong and in time will wear and perhaps cut through your quilt. Put it to use in the garden to support your plants instead. Threads come in different weights. Unlike when you step on a scale, a smaller number actually signifies that the thread is thicker. Remember, the smaller the number, the thicker the thread and the higher the number, the finer the thread. A spool of thread that has 30 wt on it is going to be thicker than a spool of thread that has 40 wt written on it. Keep in mind that needle sizes work like dress sizes which is the opposite of how thread works. The lower the size on the needle the smaller or thinner it is, and the lower the weight of thread the thicker it is. Ply is another word used to describe thread. A ply is one strand of thread and one-ply thread will naturally be a very weak thread. Three-ply thread is three strands of thread twisted together and will be a stronger thread. It is important to consider the characteristics of thread types when choosing which to use in your quilting project. Cotton thread is a natural fibre and has been around forever. Commonly used in many piecing and quilting projects it is available in various weights. Polyester thread is a man made fibre. It is quite a strong thread. Rayon thread is generally considered a natural fibre. It is also a strong thread. When used in quilting it has a beautiful shine that looks a little like silk. Metallic thread is a man made fibre. Historically this thread was actually fine wires of gold, silver and copper. Nowadays the fibre content of metallic thread is not usually so exotic but rather polyester or a polyester and nylon blend. Silk thread is a natural fibre (and probably one of the most expensive threads). It looks exquisite when used for quilting designs on quilts especially in traditional quilting. Monofilament is a man made fibre. Many people despise this thread but it can be absolutely tops in many circumstances. It comes as 100% nylon or 100% polyester. The nylon is preferable to the polyester as the nylon is very fine, soft and flexible almost like hair. It is not like fishing line! If the monofilament thread you have tried before is thick and hard like fishing line throw the stuff away and make sure you buy a quality monofilament thread from your quilt store. The polyester seems not as fine as the nylon and perhaps has a little less stretch to it. A good quality monofilament will be easy, flexible and soft to use. If you tried monofilament thread in the past and given up on it do give it another try! With a quality monofilament thread, you will find that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. 1. It comes in clear and smoke colour. The clear is good on light fabrics (e.g. pastels and medium colours) while the smoke works well on darker colours. 2. It is great to use in the ditch, around appliqus and embroidery, etc. Wherever this thread is used, it is almost invisible and is very comforting when you are learning to quilt a quilt, especially when stitching in the ditch. If you happen to oops out of the ditch on any colour of fabric, it is not noticeable. This makes it an ideal thread for beginner machine quilters. Straying from the ditch will leave an obvious sign if using any other type of thread. 3. It is smart choice of thread when you want to quilt designs on many different coloured fabrics. It blends beautifully with the fabric, which is better than trying to choose the correct tone on tone colour of thread for every different coloured fabric you wish to quilt. 4. Do be aware that you need to be careful when using the iron near these monofilament threads, as they are a little heat sensitive (the nylon is more sensitive than the polyester). Generally, it is not necessary to put an iron anywhere near a quilted quilt so this should not present a major problem. Now that you have decided on what thread you will use heres a final tip. There are mainly two different methods of winding thread on to the spool parallel and cross-wound. Cross-wound threads behave better when placed on a horizontal spool pin. Parallel wound threads behave best when placed on a vertical spool pin. To prevent the thread from twisting and knotting, you may need to place parallel wound threads on a thread stand, placed a small distance to the back of the machine. Either way, knowing that compost helps the garden to grow better, faster and more productive can help change a kids mind about compost or make it more interesting. What is Composting? A compost pile is basically rotted material used to supplement a garden area with nutrients and moisture retention power. But its more than just a pile of rot. There is a science and art to a compost pile. Everything rots eventually. When it breaks down, it breaks down into a simpler, less complex substance. This can be stimulated by many things in the environment including weathering (erosion) and other chemicals. The soil consists of layers. The top layer is often called the organic material layer because its where the plants get their nutrients. When you form a compost pile, you are adding to this ability to maintain the correct amount of nutrients and add a moisture retention ability, the ability to hold water which the living plants need. Building a Compost Bin Compost piles can be simple or they can be elaborate. Kids can usually dig the simple compost pile. Its simple and yet a very effective compost pile. Containing the compost is the best bet because it allows you to control the pile better. It also prevents wind or animals from coming and destroying your compost pile. Any type of container will do as long as you have some air holes. The air does help break down the compost pile. Remember, it needs to rot. You could also take building materials such as bricks, blocks or wood and build a small box or rectangular shaped container. Then make sure you have some sort of lid even just a piece of wood that you place on top. Be sure to turn the compost at least once a day, preferably twice a day in hotter weather. The compost pile needs to cook. Cook? Yes, it gets hot and that helps organisms such as bacteria to further the rotting process. You can constantly add stuff to the compost pile as it continues to break down. It can take a little or long time to break down things depending on what it put into the compost pile. What to Put into the Compost Pile There are many things that can be put into the compost pile and there are some things you should not put into the compost pile. You can put leaves and grass clippings from when you (or your parents) mow the lawn. These help add nutrients too. You can also add table scraps such as the leftover green peas or other vegetables. Just be sure not to add any scraps that include meat or other material that contains oil like pastas. These can cause an odor and that might attract unwanted visitors to your compost pile such as raccoons, opossums and insects. The society that we live in sets the stage for stereotypes to play a major role in our daily living, but the finals choice to act this way is left to us as individual. In stereotyping, is it "we"(the people) or is it "me" (the person) who is forever the judge of what environment I choose to surround myself in? As I have come to realize, it is "I" who has the power to succeed in lifting the blinders of "reality" and seeing with what we have come to call the "naked truth." Stereotyping is neither necessarily as powerful as a term such as racial prejudice nor as materially shaped as ethnic authenticity. Stereotype is a personal and sometimes offensive feeling that has been formulated into a word. It is a personal judgment that can offend us, as it is more an inward feeling. A thought. Or is it merely just a ploy in acknowledging our judgments because our ignorance is too strong? When I was a younger, I had a teacher that loved to teach me philosophy. Her open-mindedness towards the judgment of people and their stereotypes fascinated me. In many points I was hungry to learn and her words could be like gold to a young mind as mine. As I grew towards a philosophy, she directed me towards her personal library where she handed me a book called, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. As she pulled this well used paperback book off the shelf, I looked at the other books of which were just as used and would be more like something she would direct me towards and books such as The Art of War, The Warrior Within, and Confucianism. These books seemed more typical in my learning, and what was my real view of her? Was it distorted in some way? Had I been deceived all this time? So I took the book like a good student, put it among my things and carried it home. I opened the book and began to read. It explained things about how to view people through some guy that thought anyone could be his friends. As I read into this book, I kept thinking about my teacher. Wondering why she would give me a book of this nature and what were her intentions? Then I would look back at the book without truly reading it, and think, "what a strange and manipulative book, I don't want any part of this." I remember trying to sponge in what I thought, was nonsense. Why? You see my first mistake in why I couldn't sponge it in was because I had already made the decision in my mind that this book was not the book for me. By some incredible well-shaped thought in my head, I was doomed not to understand the book only because of the cover. Here, I had a teacher telling me I could learn from this book and I refused it. I judged it because it "appeared" manipulative and pointless to me. Why would I want to understand other people, I thought she was teaching me how to deal with my own spirits and issues. This affected our relationship, because I used this book to judge the way I felt about her. Our relationship deteriorated because of the way I judged and I shouldn't have allowed it to effect me so harshly. Needless to say, the cover seemed manipulative and sneaky "Win Friends?" I told myself what a rude comment, you don't win friends, and you make friends. Right? Because of my ignorance, I only achieved 4 chapters. I believe I not only disappointed myself as a student. My teacher knew that I could not confront my own judgment and read the damn book! I disappointed her and myself. I was off the scale in distorting my stereotype that I had for my teacher. This inevitably began a new path of doubt. I had allowed such a small judgment of what she "should" be teaching me, which distorted the bigger judgments that would forever have me doubting her techniques as a teacher. Why after these years have I come to apply this to stereotyping, I wonder? Time has passed and to my normal self it seems such a weak mistake. The grand joke of it all is that I still have the book. Last year I finally finished it and it has created quite a tool in dealing with strangers. Isn't that what she was trying to tell me? You see, I can look back now and believe it was a test. Now if I truly think about it, she loved that book just by the ragged shape it was in. In reality I think she shared that book with me so that I might know in dealing with people, that I might think of having a game plan. A confidence. Not a self-fulfilling way to dig into peoples brains and uses it against them, but for good. Which was what I thought of her all along. I believe now that she was trying to teach me a simpler way of getting to know and like people from the view of my own eyes. In observation, I allowed the cover to identify how someone might feel about me reading this book. I allowed the words on the front determine just exactly what I thought this whole book was about. I even went as far as to stereotype myself and in doing so, I released a little more ignorance into my environment. Is this what stereotyping is? To myself, it can't be offending others as much as it offends my own spirit. When I sort out something, as if filing it away, I am in fact sorting my own thoughts. Allowing "others" view of what "I" see as concrete evidence to make a decision in how I am going to judge in my surrounding environment. Stereotyping is a defense mechanism we use in shadowing our own identity of the truth. It is in fact, the thought of what others have thought. I let the cover of that book and what I "thought" my teacher was "supposed" to be teaching me cloud my reality and drive my ignorance. It was as if it were a natural part of my youth. I have come to realize that stereotyping is a way to impress others. Are we merely programming what we think is the truth? My teacher had showed me a way to think outside of myself and my own stereotype blinded me into rationalizing what I thought "the way" was. I chose to put this in my environment and in fact offended my own thoughts on judging a book by its cover. Maybe that is the true definition of stereotyping, for me.
