Online Dating Toolkit?
By Stephanie Constantina You know those “here is what you need to make the item” instructional leaflets? Well, the other day I began wondering what a toolkit for online dating might be like. I was surprised by what I found… For my online dating toolkit I began with the physical things you will need, then went on to the emotional or mental requirements. When I looked at the physical things all that I found that the average person needs for dating online is: - a computer - an Internet connection and email - a means of payments, such as a credit card These are all things that nearly every Internet user already possesses. But why a means of payment, when there are completely free dating sites out there? Well, as you will no doubt read elsewhere other than in this article, there is really no such thing as free. All businesses have costs and must make a profit if they are to remain online. So sites that appear to be completely free will either entice you to buy things through their advertising or be persistent in trying to sell you their products. There are other issues with completely free sites too, such as less vetting of members than with paid subscription sites. So, for a bit safer, somewhat better quality Internet dating, a paid subscription site is recommended. Turning to the mental requirements, here is the list I came up with: - some patience - some perseverance - a sense of humour - a spirit of adventure Why patience? Because, no matter how good the online dating service, it may take some time to work your way through online dating profiles, contact people who appeal to you, establish potential relationships with them via email and finally narrow them down to somebody you wish to date. However, most see this as an advantage over conventional dating, in which you know very little at first about the person you date. Perseverance. You need perseverance for other very reasons described above, though patience and perseverance are not the same thing. Perseverance is a quality that makes you carry on even when things don’t work out exactly as you would like. Online dating is fun, but there is nothing worthwhile that does not bring occasional frustrations, and you should be ready for these too. A sense of humour is something you will need if you are female, for example, and find yourself bombarded with too many emails from prospective male suitors for you to cope with. You will also need a sense of humour to read some of the emails from men who do not seem to realise that they are addressing a real person and not just a listing on a dating site. But why will you need a spirit of adventure? If you have not tried online dating before, then you must realise that it works rather differently from dating in the offline world, and you will need a spirit of adventure to set forth into this new uncharted realm. But, once you get your bearings it’s all pretty straightforward. So there you have it. Dating online is not something you have to have special equipment for or a particularly developed mental approach to deal with.
